Coaching
“Coaching” is a term that has become more common in recent years. Unfortunately, people have differing understandings as to what "coaching" actually means. Very often, people think it is what managers do to get the best out of their staff. While it can certainly include that, the International Coach Foundation "ICF" defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought - provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
Coaching includes several principles from sports coaching like teamwork, meeting and exceeding potential in order to become one's best. Although, unlike sports coaching, the results are not win or lose based. Coaches focus on strengthening their clients' skills from the first session forward. Any amount of coaching will benefit a client from this perspective.
A supportive friend is wonderful to have in life, yet does not hold the objectivity and detachment that a coach does. An expat coach is a professional who is trusted to work with you on the most important aspects of your life and/or business. A coach offers a different perspective of the clients' challenge because of the emotional distance the professional relationship offers.
Coaching is a supporting process but different from mentoring, and is neither comparable nor compatible to any kind of therapy.
Mentoring
Mentoring generally follows the format of generalized advice and guidance of career development. Mentoring is about developing a relationship between a more senior and experienced employee ("mentor") and an less or inexperienced "mentee" to guide and develop the mentee's knowledge and career progression. The mentor is not usually your immediate supervisor/manager or within your organization. This can allow the luxury of talking to an impartial confidante who is not your manager. They will have the ability to listen to your issues, afford you the opportunity to vent unrestrictedly, and to support and assist you in achieving your goals.
Limits of Coaching
Coaches are not therapists. They cannot provide medical advice or diagnosis, and should not be considered as the right choice for deep forms of therapy and soul searching. Therefore, coaching is not therapy. Where therapy brings understanding and awareness of the past to a client, coaching provides the support and strategy to make changes based on the awareness a client holds. Coaching is movement oriented, action based, and geared to the future.
